In 1974, Korea launches its first BIG buy of fighters consisting of 126 F-5Es and 20 F-5Fs. These aircraft were followed by a license production contract between Northrop and The Hanjin Corporation in 1980 which cost about 104 million dollars. The Hanjin Corporation produced 48 F-5Es and 20 F-5Fs during 1981~1986. These aircraft were much modified than the US imported ones. There are several RWR sensors added to the front and the rear fuselage. The radar features 40nm search range compared to the original aircraft's 20nm. Automatic flaps were introduced, and chaff(15) and flare(30) dispensers were added to the rear fuselage. The aircrafts appearance is typical of late model F-5E featuring flat nose radoms, enlarged LEX. The first F-5Es were allocated to the 1st Fighter Wing (115th, 122nd, and 123rd Tactical Fighter Squadrons) based at Kwang Ju air base. F-5E equips the 115th, 122nd, and 123rd TFS of the 1st Fighter Wing based at Kwangju, the 102nd ,103rd, and 111th TFS of the 10th Fighter Wing based at Suwon, and the 201st and 203rd TFS of the 5th Fighter Wing
