Northrop F-5A Freedom Fighter ROKAF

 한국 공군은 1965년 4월 미군의 군사원조 프로그램에 따라 16대의 F-5A와 4대의 F-5B를 최초로 수원 기지의 제 10 항공단의 105비행대가 도입하였습니다. 그리고 같은해 9월 F-86F 세이버 전투기를 대체하면서 본격 활동상태로 들어가게 됩니다. 그외의 추가로 14대가 수원의 102FS에 배치되게 됩니다. 1971년 당시 한국 공군의 보유 대수는 A형이 87대, B형 35대, RF-5A 8대입니다. 1972년 미국의 요청으로 베트남 공군에 36대의 F-5A와 RF-5A 8대를 넘겨주는 대가로 F-4D팬톰을 16대 공여받기도하였는데 이후 베트남 패망 이후 탈출한 F-5A 19대와 미군의 2대를 넘겨 받아서 세력을 다시 확대하게 됩니다. 일부 F-5A는 한동안 수원기지의 "Black Eagles" 공중곡예비행단에서도 운용되었습니다. F-5A 운용국 중에서 비교적 많은 대수를 장비한 국가로 아직 일부 기체가 현용으로 보시다시피 운용되고 있습니다. 이들은 우선적으로 개발중인 A/T-50 Golden Eagle로 대체되게 됩니다.

  The first F-5As arrived in Korea in April of 1965, where 16 F-5As and four F-5Bs equipped the 105th Fighter Squadron of the 10th Fighter Wing based at Suwon, which achieved operational status on September 1, replacing F-86F Sabres. Another 14 F-5As were delivered to the 102nd FS, also based at Suwon. ROKAF was one of the largest operators of the F-5A/B series. In 1972 under the favor of the US government, 36 F-5As & 8 RF-5As were given to Vietnam Air Force, and as a trade, ROKAF received 18 F-4Ds and late model F-5Es. After the fall of South Vietnam, 19 Ex-Vietnam AF F-5As and 2 Ex-USAF F-5As were delivered to Korea. In 1971, ROKAF was operating a total of 87 F-5As with 35 B two-seaters and 8 RF-5As. Some of these equipped the "Black Eagles" aerobatic team based at Suwon. Today ROKAF F-5A is still operational in 2nd line duties, and some of the aircraft serve as an advanced single seat fighter trainers. But around 2005, most of these remaining aircraft will be replaced by more advanced aircraft like the developing A/T-50 Golden Eagle.

 F-5A is equipped with 2 20mm cannons. It doesn't have a radar. The nose is painted in black(KF-5Es noses are painted in a light grey color)

 한국 공군의 F-5A는 도색은 그레이 계열이지만 각종 데이터 마킹은 원색 그대로 기입하고 있습니다. F-5A에 그려지는 표범 2마리는 양쪽 모두 그려져 있습니다.

 ROKAF F-5A is painted in a 2 tone Air-superiority scheme, but most stencils are finished in high-visibility colors. F-5A are painted with 2 leopard heads on each side.
